John May:  Interests

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award International Association

The International Award is an exciting self-development programme available to all 14 to 25 year olds. Over 7 million young people worldwide have taken up the Award challenge.

The Award is tough but it is about individual challenge, not about reaching specific standards set by someone else. Young people design their own Award Programme, set their own goals, and record their own progress. The only person they compete against is themselves, by challenging their own beliefs about what they can achieve.

Young people who do the Award:
*   Discover what they are made of
*   Make an impact on their community
*   Develop a set of life skills.
*   Most of all, they have fun!

The Award is not an organisation, but a programme – any group working with young people can run the Award. This is the great strength of the Programme, as it means that it can be used in prisons, by Scout and Guide groups, or in youth clubs.

Young Enterprise

With more than 40 years’ experience, Young Enterprise is the UK’s leading business and enterprise education charity.

It offers a range of programmes, based on the principle of Learning by Doing, which brings volunteers from business into the classroom to work with teachers and students. Some of our programmes enable students to work together to run their own real company. Others use games, hands on activities and role play to develop skills and capabilities for business and enterprise.

With more than 5,500 schools and colleges participating in our programmes, Young Enterprise currently reaches more than 350,000 young people a year from primary school right through to university.

The businesses and volunteers that support Young Enterprise take an active role in building a better-motivated, educated and enterprising workforce, at the same time making a real difference to the existing lives and future potential of young people who live and attend school in their area.

Career Academies UK

Career Academies UK is a registered charity, set up by a group of key figures within the UK business community in 2002 to promote and support the development of ‘Career Academies’ in sixth forms throughout the United Kingdom.

The Career Academy model operates as an educational franchise, with schools and colleges running a carefully researched and extensively trialled programme for middle-achieving sixth form students.   Schools agree to run their programmes within a clearly defined framework, but are also free to add enhancements to meet local needs.

Career Academies UK serves as a key intermediary, bringing the worlds of business and education together through a powerful mix of academic and vocational elements.      It is affiliated to the National Academy Foundation in the US, benefiting from its 20-plus years’ experience and involvement of 2,500 companies in 40 states.

Business in the Community
Business in the Community is a unique movement of companies across the UK committed continually to improving their positive impact on society, with a core membership of 700 companies, including 75 of the FTSE 100.

70% of business in the community member companies identify education as an essential focus for their community investment. The education campaign works to maximise the effectiveness of business commitment to this key social issue and to inspire the other 30% to get involved.

The Scout Association
Scouting is a world wide educational Movement for young people. It contributes to the fulfilment of their potential using a progressive and enjoyable values-based programme for personal development.   The Scout Association in the United Kingdom seeks to provide young people with opportunities to participate in adventurous outdoor activities, learn team-building skills and develop new friendships.

It is firmly committed to co-education so that boys and girls can develop together and meet the aims of Scouting through one programme.

Membership is open to all young people and adults, regardless of ability, who are prepared to accept Scouting’s fundamental principles. Today, there are over half a million adults and young people enjoying the fun and friendship of Scouting in the United Kingdom.
